i just looked at the "car & track" tape and studied the close-up pit stop shot of clem's car . there're no numbers or letters on the hood , so can't tell if it was a boss or a 427 . more of a gut feeling than anything else , but i'd guess it was a 427 . i don't think many LMS cars were running bosses in '71 . didn't the LMS cars have to use restrictor plates at that time , also - at least on the super speedways ? most of the GN fords used 427s in '71 , IIRC , as they were allowed to use "bigger" plates . i think the LMS fords would follow along the same line of thinking . the winner , george follmer in a '61 starliner , used a 396 version of a 427 . the trunk is white , with no markings that i could see . the only thing i could see was what appeared to be the t-bird emblem on the rear most vertical part of the deck lid , as it appears on stock '61-'62-'63 birds . i couldn't tell for sure if this was the actual chrome emblem , or if it was painted on . i looked for that character line that runs from the front fender thru the middle of the door , but couldn't see anything , so i think it's safe to say it was a '61 or a '62 bird . and tony - i believe i was the one who said , some time ago , that clem's t-bird was maintained by prison inmates , and had been featured in an early issue of "stock car racing" magazine . i was wrong . it was someone else's t-bird . i've since come across the photo , and will post it shortly . sorry for the "misinformation" . jack
